Different Types of Air Fresheners

If you’re moving into a home that’s been vacant for more than a week or so, it may smell musty when you move in. You’ll probably want to freshen the air a little. There are plenty of ways to do that, but all too often air fresheners just cover up a problem rather than getting rid of it.

Most of the smell in a musty house comes from dust. To get rid of the smell completely you’ll have to get rid of the dust- and that’s a good idea anyway, because dust causes all kinds of allergic reactions and makes childhood asthma worse. As soon as the packers and movers are gone, open all the windows for a couple of hours (even if it’s noisy) and hoover all the carpets.

When moving to storage you don’t have to worry about dust, but if you’re moving something out of storage and into a new home, make sure to clear away as much dust as possible before bringing the item into its new home. Wipe down furniture with a damp cloth and brush soft furnishings if possible.

Simple air freshener sprays can be used to add a light scent to the air in your new home or office. They come in two types- those that you can spray when you feel the need and those that automatically release a puff of scent at intervals. The last kind can be used anywhere but they are particularly useful for toilets and bathrooms.

Moving & storage always involve a lot of dust, but if there is a smell of damp or mould, just covering with air freshener and hoovering won’t get rid of the problem. Left unchecked, it will only get worse. Identify where the smell is coming from, and if you can see any signs of damp or black stains, dealing with the cause is an absolute necessity. You can get rid of the stains with a dilute bleach solution, but do take care- it’s strong stuff.

Unpleasant odors can also come from usage rather than dust or damp. These should also be removed rather than just covered. If something in your new home really smells bad, look for a spray-on air freshener with an anti-bacterial component. That will help remove the problem for good.

If you don’t like using chemicals, there are other ways to make a space smell nice. People have been burning incense for thousands of years, because of the pleasing scent it releases. The subtle, fresh but smoky smell is a relaxing and wholesome.

The simplest way to make a new home smell good is to cook a meal in the kitchen. Everyone loves the scent of baking bread, and whatever your favourite home-cooked dinner is, preparing it will really make a house or apartment seem like it belongs to you. If you’re not handy in the kitchen, just buy some pre-made cookie dough and bake a batch in your new oven. The smell will spread throughout the home.

Great article, the meal tip was a nice touch. We advise our clients to create a quick cross-ventilation stream with fans to air out a place quickly and effectively.
