How to Dress on Moving Day
Choosing the right clothing is an essential part of getting ready for moving day. It’ll probably be a tough day and a long one, so dressing right can help you get through it in comfort. Picking appropriate clothing can certainly help avoid a few common problems, and the fewer of those you encounter when moving, the better.
First of all, think about how the professionals dress. Packers and movers tend to wear clothing that’s roomy but not baggy. This means easy movement but no extra material to get in the way. The more elaborate a shirt or blouse is, the more likely it is to get caught on something, stuck in a door, or generally irritate. Workwear should be simple. Movers also tend to wear tough fabrics that will stand up to abrasion and other rough treatment.
Jeans are ideal, but not all jeans are created equal. Skinny jeans and tight stovepipes may look good, but they’re constrictive. You might not even notice when you’re out on the town or going shopping, but on moving day you’ll be bending down and reaching up more than usual. Pick jeans with a little bit of extra room to ensure full freedom of movement.
Stretchy fabrics can be more comfortable choices when you’re physically active, and pockets are great. They’re perfect for keeping small, valuable items safe. If your passport is in your pocket, you know where it is at all times and don’t need to worry.
Moving an office or a home can create a dusty atmosphere. Avoid white clothing because it may start to look dirty quickly. If you do need to wear office clothing on the day, don’t wear your favorite suit or a silk blouse. Choose darker shades and less expensive clothes, and if professional packers and movers aren’t being employed and you have to be involved in shifting boxes and packing up files, take a change of clothes to work with you. That way there is no risk of having to spend the whole afternoon sweaty and dusty.
If you’re moving a home, you have the freedom to wear what you want. Unrestrictive, dark, durable clothing is the order of the day, and if you have heavy boots, wear them. Boxes can easily get dropped and thick boots will protect your toes from potential injury. Avoid sandals and anything with an open toe.
Even if you won’t be moving boxes yourself, high heels are not a good idea. There will be a lot of extra obstacles around on moving day and it’s easy to trip. Pick flat, sensible shoes. Be aware that you might be on your feet all day so go for comfort over style.
Thick, hot clothing may make you sweaty if you’re going to be packing things and helping move boxes and furniture, but remember to leave at least one warm jacket unpacked. When it comes time to say goodbye to your old home and step outside, being cold should be the last thing on your mind, and nor should you have to unpack a box to find warm clothing for the journey to your new place.
