Common Questions When Moving To or Within LA
Where can I find boxes for my Los Angeles movers?
If you just don’t have time to hit up a liquor store or a big-box store like Costco or Big Lots to score some free cardboard boxes, you’re in luck! FlatRate can deliver boxes directly to your home before you make the move out west.
Consult our helpful guide on where to find boxes for your move to make sure you’re adequately prepared to get all your stuff to your new place in one piece. And if you have any questions, be sure to contact our LA movers—we are more than happy to help our new neighbors find everything they need.
When is the best time of year to move in Los Angeles?
With nearly 300 days a year of abundant sunshine, Los Angeles seems like paradise. Typical temps peak around 85 degrees in the summer, 75 in the fall and spring and 70 in the winter. Humidity tends to be around 80% in the mornings and drops to around 65% in the afternoons. While January and February are the “rainiest” months, May, June and July bring a “marine layer,” which is a cloudy overcast around the coastal strip. Keep in mind, “The Valley” tends to be about 10 degrees warmer than the west side of the city.
No matter when you move to the City of Angels, our storage facilities never freeze, our temperature-controlled trucks will keep your items protected from any and all weather-related elements, and on the rare occasion of a rainstorm, we use tarps and additional shrink-wrap when moving your items.
Which highways should I avoid when moving in Los Angeles?
Simply put; driving around LA can be a nightmare any time between 4pm and 7pm. Familiarize yourself with the 101, 405 and 10—they are the key to getting around. Major roads like Santa Monica Blvd, Olympic Blvd, Pico Blvd, Sepulveda and Wilshire Blvd. will help you maneuver around major traffic jams from time to time. (Shortcuts like the Sepulveda Pass will also help you bypass some of the madness.)
And if you’re used to navigating big cities by way of public transit, LA will be a total 180. Public transportation is practically non-existent, but Uber is a very popular alternative. It’s always a good idea to ask your realtor or FlatRate’s LA office for any traffic tips to your new home, or download the California Traffic Report app on your smartphone for real-time and personalized traffic information about the Greater LA area.
Where Should I Park?
Don’t add to the stress of moving by parking in one of LA’s notorious no-parking zones. This isn’t like other cities where you have a 50/50 shot at being ticketed. It’s more like 99/1. Check and double check for signs and hours—they can be hidden. However, when you hire movers who know the area inside and out, they know what to look for, and can avoid the spaces that seem too good to be true.
It’s also important to keep your parking meter well-fed. Meter maids are sweeping constantly, and have no qualms about hitting you up with a costly fine!

Relocating to LA? A Guide to Living like an Angeleno!
Movers, Los Angeles Style!
If you are making the trek to the City of Angels and you need Los Angeles movers to help you along the way, you’ve come to the right place.
Los Angeles is so much more than just the entertainment capital of the world. Home to a magnificent melting pot of cuisines, a myriad of beautiful beaches and surrounded by majestic mountains, this city has everything you could ever want—including movers who know the area like the back of their hand, and offer a plethora of services to meet any need you could imagine.
Los Angeles’ Business
While movie studios like 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal, Disney and Warner Bros. are arguably the most famous LA-based businesses, this SoCal city is a hub for so much more. The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach make LA the fifth busiest seaport in the world, and the largest cruise ship center on the West Coast.
And LA’s economic engine (that runs to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars) also comprises top finance, international trade, aerospace and tourism companies.
Los Angeles’ Attractions
If music is more your tune, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the centerpiece of the Los Angeles Music Center, is home base for the prestigious LA Philharmonic. And as far as art museums go, the Getty Center, a stunning structure in its own right, is home to some of the most iconic art on the West Coast. Check out this comprehensive list of top things to do in LA.
Los Angeles’ Food & Drink
Where can you go for out-of-this-world Thai, Chinese and Korean cuisine? Not to mention classic American fare and authentic Mexican flavors? Look no further than LA. Your Los Angeles movers can point you in the right direction, or you can peruse LA Weekly’s breakdown of the city’s smorgasbord of succulence.
Be sure to stop by Pink’s Hot Dog, and seek out one of Roy Choi’s signature food trucks for a Korean taco that will knock your socks off. Wolfgang Puck’s Spago is still a mainstay on the fine dining scene, while Patina, on the ground floor of the Disney Concert Hall, is making headway with foodies all over the world.
Los Angeles’ Parks and Beaches
Before we get to the sun-drenched strips of surfer heaven, work up a sweat by going for a hike in Griffith Park. Don’t miss the picturesque views from the Santa Monica Mountains, which stretch all the way through the city down to the Pacific.
Now, let’s talk beaches. From the wavecutters at Malibu’s Surfrider Beach, to the cafes of Hermosa Beach to the outlandish people watching at Venice Beach, this stretch of the Pacific coastline has every type of sandy paradise imaginable. Let FlatRate handle all the details of your move, so that you can take your time enjoying all the natural beauty your new home has to offer.
Los Angeles’ Sports
With the nearest NFL team in San Diego, what’s a sports fan to do in LA? Well, for starters, you can root for the Los Angeles Lakers and/or the Los Angeles Clippers—professional NBA teams that call the Staples Center home. NHL’s LA Kings also play at the arena, while the other local hockey team, the Anaheim Ducks, play about an hour south of the city (as do the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).
And if we’re talking baseball, be sure to grab some peanuts and Cracker Jacks at a Dodgers or Angels game. For sports fans with more of an international interest, make the trek out to Carson to see the LA Galaxy do their thing. NCAA fans—you are not forgotten! UCLA and USC will keep you busy cheering all year long.
There are several Los Angeles moving companies, but you would be hard pressed to find one with our depth of knowledge and experience. We work hard to earn Los Angeles’ business, one move at a time.
