Many people will agree that winter is the season that they do not want to move. However, summer poses its challenges, and most people are not prepared for them. Sure, there is no risk of snow, ice, or freezing temperatures, but that does not mean there will not be some obstacles to overcome. Below are some summer moving tips you should find very helpful.

  • Book Your Movers Early – Spring and summer are the most popular times to move, so do not even think about waiting until the last minute to call movers. If you do, you may have a hard time finding any that are available. This is especially true if you need the move to take place on a weekend or the 1st or 15th of the month. Ideally, you will try to schedule on a weekday.
  • Consider Traffic – Depending on where you live, traffic could be heavier in the summer. This could be due to tourism or recreational vehicles heading to the campground near you. Not to mention, this is the time of year when streets are often being fixed, so plan your moving time and route thoughtfully.
  • Plan for a Garage Sale – If you plan then you can have a garage sale before the move to get rid of everything you do not want or need. A little planning will ensure your garage sale is a success.
  • Make Arrangements for Kids and Pets – Since the kids are home from school you will want to try to find a place for them to go for a few hours. There is no point in having them around when movers are trying to do their job. This applies to pets, too. A cat can easily be put in the bathroom temporarily, but if you have a large dog, it is a good idea to have someone watch him for a bit. The movers will not be able to make sure he doesn’t bolt out the door and some dogs get stressed watching movers handle their things. The last thing you want is your dog getting spooked and jumping the fence, especially at the new house where he is not familiar with the neighborhood.
  • Dealing with Perishables – You will want to use the food in a fridge and freezer, so you do not have to worry about moving it. If you have some food leftover put it in a cooler and transport it in your car to the new place. Keep the temperature of the moving truck in mind when you pack your pantry. If you have chocolate or candy or anything else that will be ruined by the heat pack it in a box that will be moved in your car.
  • Beat the Heat – Even if you hire movers you will still be doing some walking and standing in the heat. Plus, if your home does not have air conditioning then there will be nowhere you can go to get relief. Keep fans plugged in, stock plenty of water, freeze towels to put around your neck, and wear lightweight, moisture-wicking material.
