Moving is a process made of multiple parts. Naturally, planning plays a big role when preparing for the big day. After decades of moving people forward, we know that the secrets to a stress-free move are coordinating detailed logistics and allowing for the proper time to plan it all out.
Thinking of our customers and the many concerns that might come to their minds when preparing for a move, we have gathered the top questions you should ask yourself when planning your relocation.
Should I hire movers or coordinate the move myself?
The first and most important question, this decision is different for everyone since it depends on factors such as distance, money, time, and complexity of the move. Luckily for you, we have already explored the pros and cons of moving yourself vs. hiring a moving company. Read our blog now and learn what is best for your moving needs.
How far in advance should I schedule my move? What are the best days of the week to move?
FlatRate recommends at least three weeks in advance when moving locally. For long-distance or international, we recommend four weeks. When it comes to picking a day of the week, Wednesdays are the best day since fewer people request them, followed by Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays and weekends are usually the busiest days resulting in competition for elevator access, which can cause delays in your move.
How much do movers really cost?
A lot of moving companies work on an hourly rate while at FlatRate, our price is based on your inventory, the distance you are traveling, and the complexity of the move. Factors such as furniture size, number of large items, and level of fragility all play roles in determining your move’s cost.
How do I get rid of items I don’t want to be included in my move?
Moving is also the perfect time to finally start that much-needed spring cleaning you’ve been avoiding for years: take the opportunity to start fresh and reconsider your inventory. Deciding what’s worth keeping and what should finally be left behind is a crucial step in the moving process. If you don’t know what to do with the items you don’t want anymore, take advantage of our guide on how to sell your furniture and where to donate your belongings.
Are there any items that movers should not move?
Yes. Movers will never move firearms, ammunition, drugs, chemicals, plants, and pets. Here is a longer list of items that are prohibited and other things you should consider keeping with you at all times during your move.
Do you pay movers before or after the move?
It depends on the moving company. At FlatRate, we charge you 48 hours before move day but some moving companies only charge upon delivery. Be aware that reliable moving companies will never charge you during your quote or right when you book the service.
How much should I tip the movers?
For local services, industry-recommended is 10-20% of your move. For long-distance moves, FlatRate’s recommended amount is a 5-8% split between the pickup team and the delivery team.
Do I have to be with the movers during the move?
Yes, it is always recommended that you or a representative be present to open the contract with the movers. At FlatRate, we suggest that someone stay with the movers the entire time during both pickup and delivery.
Will the movers take care of parking permits?
Although many moving companies are licensed in their appropriate cities, permit parking is not included. It is usually the clients’ responsibility to obtain designated city parking permits. If you’re planning on moving and know that you will need a parking permit for the moving truck, make that a top priority.
Do movers pack everything?
Most moving companies offer packing services included with your move. This means that you’re only responsible for packing your personal belongings and other essentials such as medication and valuable items. Take a look at FlatRate’s list of items we always pack for you to be sure of what to expect when it comes to packing.
