Moving can be risky business. Heavy items, strenuous all day work, and lots of movement. Here are a few tips to stay safe and reduce your risk both during and after a pandemic.

Don’t Lift Heavy Items Yourself – Seriously!

That heavy dresser you think two of you could lift together if you try really hard? Step away and call in the professionals. Trying to lift something too heavy can lead to injuries and damages, all of which can easily exceed the cost of hiring movers who are trained to move heavy furniture, to do it for you.

Stay Hydrated

Moving is hard work! You’re likely to be on your feet all day packing and unpacking. Make sure that while you do you drink and have access to adequate amounts of water. Bring a cooler or fill a few water bottles with water, you’ll be glad you did.

Dress Comfortably

Wear layers (in case you get too cold or too hot as the day goes on) and comfortable closed shoes. Try to avoid baggy clothing and cover up as much as possible.

Clear a Path

Pay special attention to keeping all foot trafficked areas free of clutter. The last thing you want is for someone to trip.

Keep a Basic First Aid Kit On Hand

Before you move, gather up a few first aid supplies just in case any accidents occur. You never know when band aids, antiseptic, antibiotic ointment, ibuprofen will come in handy.

Don’t Over-Pack Your Boxes

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Keep your boxes balanced and of a reasonable weight. The last thing you want is for your box to break mid move!

Reduce Foot Traffic

Try using a virtual home consultation instead of having movers come to your home to assess pre-move.

Check with your moving company to see if they offer “livestream moving” so that you can monitor the move while staying outside the home.

Ventilate, Ventilate, Ventilate

While you can’t completely eliminate risk when moving during a pandemic, you can reduce it. With people moving in and out of enclosed, indoor spaces, the CDC recommends trying your best to increase airflow and ventilation. That means opening windows and doors, carefully positioning fans to circulate fresh air, and utilizing portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) fan/filtration systems to help enhance air cleaning.
